Luigi’s Mansion – Bowser / Luigi

leave a comment »

Media: video game: “Luigi’s Mansion”
Developer: Nintendo
Platform: Gamecube

Description:

At the end of the game, Luigi is confronted by what looks like Bowser. Of note, one of Bowser’s abilities is to inhale Luigi in a gust of air (putting his Poltergust 3000 to shame). If successful, he will chew on Luigi a few times before spitting him out.

Seiken Densetsu 3 [SNES] – Pakkun Lizard, Pakkun Dragon / Duran, Angela, Kevin, Charlotte, Hawkeye, Riesz

Media: video game: “Seiken Densetsu 3”
Developer: Squaresoft
Platform: SNES

The following is particularly spoiler heavy.

Description:

After  シェイド (Shade), the elemental spirit joins your party, you will wind up on 火山島ブッカ (Volcanic Island Bukka). Caves in this area are home to the ぱっくんオタマ (Pakkun Tadpole), the pink tadpoles that once damaged enough, can mature into the blue ぱっくんトカゲ (Pakkun Lizard) known as ‘Biting Lizard’ in the English version of Secret of Mana. ‘Pakkun’ perhaps from ぱくぱく (Pakupaku) roughly means ‘eating, gobbling, flapping the mouth open and closed’, et cetera. Unlike the previous game, these are considered normal enemies rather than boss enemies. They are much more nimble and unfortunately their favorite attack is no longer to devour your party, but rather they have taken to using a tail attack to cause damage. They still retain their tongue flicking ability which is now named ぱっくんベロンッ, which I guess means Pakkun Tongue or Pakkun Lick, however they rarely use it. In the fan-translated version, this attack is known simply as “Gulp, gulp”.

If the lizards decide to eat you, you may notice that the chosen character often ‘outruns’ the tongue and proceeds towards the Pakkun’s body even before the tongue is retracted. Once inside the now bloated belly, the lizards will wag their tails blissfully with an equally satisfied expression on their face before they are forced to spit out their meal.

Much later in the game, once air travel becomes available, a place called ひかりのこだいいせき (Ancient Ruins of Light) is home to a blue variant of the Pakkun Tadpoles, known as ぱっくりオタマ (Pakkuri Tadpole) who mature into a green variant of the Pakkun Lizards, called ぱっくんドラゴン (Pakkun Dragon), who appear otherwise identical, but use their tongue attack even less it seems. Pakkuri or ぱっくり seems to mean ‘open, gaping, like a mouth’.

Playable characters include Duran, Angela, Hawkeye, Riesz – who are all humans – as well as Kevin, who transforms into a wolfman at night, and Charlotte the elf.

Secret of Mana [iOS, SNES, Wii VC] – Biting Lizard, Snap Dragon / Randi, Purim, Popoi

leave a comment »

Media: video game: “Secret of Mana”
Developer: Squaresoft
Platform: iOS, SNES, Wii VC

Description:

Fairly early in the game, after fighting the Spikey Tiger boss, Luka will ask you to investigate the waterfalls immediately east of the Water Palace. Inside, there will be a small pink egg patterned with a love heart that births a pink tadpole dubbed Tonpole in the English version. It is incapable of any special attacks and is only able to cause damage by jumping around.

Once damaged a sufficient amount, the music will change to boss battle music and the Tonpole will mature into a Biting Lizard, a blue lizard capable of an unnamed tongue attack that will grab any of your party members standing above, below or to the side of it. As a result it will invariably swallow that party member. If struck, the Biting Lizard will spit out that player, but if left alone it will do so regardless.

Around the midpoint of the game in the Frost Palace, you will fight three Tonpoles in a boss battle simultaneously, all of which can mature. However, if you bought all the armour in the previous town, the Biting Lizards’ swallow attack cannot cause any damage.

Near the end of the game after gaining Dryad’s magic, there is a boss battle with a green variant of the Biting Lizard known as a Snap Dragon. It is not associated with a tadpole stage so will mature immediately after hatching. Its swallow attack is much more powerful, causing considerable damage even with the latest armor.

Suikoden II – Bonaparte / Various Prey

leave a comment »

Media: video game: “Suikoden II”
Developer: Konami
Platform: PS1

Description:

Early in the game, after you are granted permission to recruit party members, there is a woman garbed in blue named Millie in Ryube village. She is looking for her lost pet named Bonaparte and will join you if you agree to help her. Upon taking the right path of the forest north of Ryube, you will enounter Bonaparte, a small six-eyed creature apparently dubbed a groundhog (though does not resemble its real-world counterpart).

When Millie approaches Bonaparte, it will engage in battle. Bonaparte is an easy enemy with only one attack: it dives into the ground, re-emerges in a larger form and inhales one of your party members, chewing them a few times before spitting them out. It is possible to delay recruiting Millie indefinitely it seems, should one desire a particular character to be on the receiving end of such an attack.

Once Bonaparte is defeated, Millie is reunited with her hungry pet and regains her Groundhog Rune, an ability in which Bonaparte will use its vacuum ability to chomp on would-be enemies for double damage, though only once per battle. I think it would not be feasible to list every type of enemy in the game as potential prey, so I don’t think I will try.

Once the character Richmond is recruited, he can investigate the other party members. If Millie is investigated repeatedly, he returns with this comment:

Richmond:
“Y…you won’t believe this…  I saw Millie actually go ‘inside’ Bonaparte and take a nap in there!”

Suikoden – Creeper / Various Prey

leave a comment »

Media: video game: “Suikoden”
Developer: Konami
Platform: PS1

Description:

A few hours into the game, after the second major battle at Garan, you can encounter pitcher plant-like enemies known as Creeper in the overworld map outside the towns Antei, Teien, Rikon, etc. as well as inside Scarletica. One of their attacks is to draw a character into their bodies, squeeze them a number of times before expelling them. Due to the diversity of potential victims, it is difficult to be thorough as to who can fall prey, however they may include humans, elves and kobolds (portrayed as dog-men).

Suikoden II – Creeper, Melonzoo / Various Prey

leave a comment »

Media: video game: “Suikoden II”
Developer: Konami
Platform: PS1

Description:

A few hours into the game in the Sindar Ruins, you can encounter the pitcher plant-like monsters known as Creeper which have the ability to inhale party members and squeeze them before spitting them out. It is difficult to say who can be plant-food in this version, as you are assigned a random selection of your recruited party members for this part of the game, which may include humans, kobolds (portrayed as dog-men), a squirrel or a wolf. Once the boss of the Sindar Ruins is defeated, it seems that you can no longer encounter them.

Later in the game, while escaping from Greenhill the first time, you can fight a variation of the Creeper enemies, known as Melonzoo. Apart from being stronger and having the watermelon-like stripes to its appearance, it is otherwise identical with the same inhale attack. The Melonzoo can only be fought at this time. Possible characters are again limited because there is an age restriction for party members at this point in the game, but may include humans, kobolds (dog-men), a squirrel or a wolf.

DinoCity – Dinosaur Plant / Timmy, Rex, Jamie, Tops

leave a comment »

Media: video game: “DinoCity”
Developer: Irem
Platform: SNES

Description:

Early in stage 1, if you enter the dark brown door, you will be transported to an area with numerous dinosaur plants. The reason I cannot decide whether they are dinosaurs or plants is that they have eyes and a face, yet are for the most part, passive, with a number of them side by side. Regardless, they cannot be damaged, and if you venture too near (or are unwittingly sent to their proximity by trampoline creatures or rising platforms) both the human and dinosaur partners are drawn in, chewed up with a deep rumbling sound and spat out. If all hearts are depleted, they are expelled regardless. It is possible to send either the human or the dinosaur friend to be masticated separately, depending on whether or not you make the human dismount his dinosaur partner. If the parter who isn’t being controlled falls prey to them, they won’t lose any hearts.
