Odin Sphere – Belial

leave a comment »

Media: video game: “Odin Sphere” by Vanillaware
Platform: Playstation 2

The boss, (Raging Dragon) Belial is a dragon with a very snake-like appearance and is fought a number of times throughout this game, once by each of the different characters. His signature attack is to inhale the character and swallow them for considerable digestion damage before regurgitating them. If he fails to swallow the character, he will simply regurgitate debris. Belial will spit out the character even if they lose all their HP as a result of the attack.

Otherwise he can do so with a simple snap of his jaws without drawing in air sharply.

Each of the five characters of the game encounter and fight against him once, and preceding characters’ story arcs must be finished before beginning with the next. In order of appearance:

  • Gwendolyn (a Valkyrie) fights him at the end of Chapter 1
  • Cornelius (a Pooka – a stylised anthropomorphic rabbit) fights him at the end of his Epilogue (‘Chapter 7’)
  • Mercedes (a Faerie/Fairy) fights him at the end of Chapter 1
  • Oswald (a human) fights him at the end of Chapter 3
  • Velvet (a human) fights him at the end of Chapter 6

The following is particularly spoiler-heavy.

After Cornelius’ fight against Belial, Urzur – the mage who had been manipulating the dragon using magic is devoured ‘off-screen’ when his spell is broken. Before Belial dies, he seeks revenge by advancing toward Urzur, mouth wide open before the screen flashes bright red.

God of War – Hydra

Media: video game: “God of War” by SCE Studios Santa Monica
Platform: Playstation 2, Playstation 3

The first boss of the game is the Hydra, and its numerous incarnations. Immediately starting the game, Kratos is in combat in a stormy ship setting. Within minutes of gameplay, the first incarnation of the Hydra reveals itself, smashing through one of the ship’s hallways. It is only capable of biting attacks though not much else.

The Hydra is encountered again after fighting some flying enemies on the deck of the ship. This Hydra is capable of grabbing Kratos, hurling him into the air and catching him within its jaws. If no buttons are pressed, the Hydra bites down with a cloud of red, and spits Kratos out.

The first two Hydra can be seen in the following video at 0:00 and 1:20 respectively.

At the end of the level, three Hydra heads are encountered, who eat a couple of men, including the man holding the key that Kratos needs. So in order to get the key back, Kratos must defeat each of the Hydra heads and venture inside to get it. Once killed, the giant Hydra’s mouth gapes open, and walking in we’re given shots of the Hydra’s fleshy throat and strings of saliva. We also see the man with the key, who is strangely intact and not yet swallowed. Kratos takes the key and instead of saving the man, tosses him down into the monster’s gut.

The full motion videos of the men being eaten by the Hydras can be seen at 5:17 of the following video.

Kratos ventures into the Hydra at 4:17 of the following video.

Yoshi’s Story – Big Blurp

leave a comment »

Media: video game: “Yoshi’s Story″ by Nintendo
Platform: Nintendo 64, Wii Virtual Console

Page 4 stage 2 is called the Jungle Puddle and has two sections. The first section is fairly straight-forward, with trees and platforms above the water and some small enemies. On reaching the second part of the level, the Hint Block offers us this piece of wisdom:

– Big Blurp –
He Lurks in the depths, waiting to have you for lunch.

Very quickly you will see a giant orange fish – Big Blurp – swimming in the water, following Yoshi and staring at him. If you fall in the water, Big Blurp is likely to swim up to Yoshi and gulp him down (complete with a speech bubble indicating how much he liked or didn’t like the taste!), and unlike the Piranha Plants of Piranha Grove, being eaten by Big Blurp instantly causes you to lose that Yoshi. Avoiding the waters doesn’t guarantee your safety either. Big Blurp is known to jump up right out of the water to try and devour Yoshi.

Near the end of the area a blue variant of the Big Blurp can be seen. Though this one is not known to leap above the water level, he will instead spit water out at Yoshi to try and knock him into the water, making him easy prey.

See the Big Blurp at 3:44 and the Big Blue Blurp at 5:55 of the following video.

Once the level is finished, the usual storytelling occurs:

The jungle lake was
swimming with hungry
fish called Blurps.

The Blurps could swim
and jump, but, mostly,
they liked to eat and eat.

The Yoshis didn’t want
to become fish bait, so
they quickly swam away.

The page turned, and
the Yoshis grew happier.

Yoshi’s Story – Piranha Plants

leave a comment »

Media: video game: “Yoshi’s Story″ by Nintendo
Platform: Nintendo 64, Wii Virtual Console

The Yoshis knew the woods,
but they have never seen a
place like the jungle.

For the first time, the
Yoshis saw Piranha Plants,
the kings of the jungle.

One plant could swallow
the Yoshis whole, so they
left the jungle in a hurry.

The page turned, and
the Yoshis grew happier.

Or so the story goes. Page 4, stage 3 is known as Piranha Grove. The place is crawling with Piranha Plants, including two unique species not previously seen in other games. The common types seen in other Mario games are still present, but as huge towering plants that are unable to eat Yoshi.

The first enemy to be seen in the level is the Piranha Pest. It is an airborne Piranha Plant owing to its strange propeller and will fly around slowly. If it sees Yoshi in its sights, it will flick out a very Yoshi-esque tongue, pulling him into its body with a good slurp. After a few seconds, Yoshi is spit up, but temporarily miniaturised. This is a rather powerful attack, removing 3 petals from the Happiness Meter, however the slurp attack is unable to kill Yoshi. The greatest danger is probably being spat out into a ‘bottomless pit’. In a way the name ‘Pest’ might be quite fitting, as to the orthodox gamer, the huge number of Piranha Pests, tongues flicking every which way makes dodging them a real feat.

In the third area of the same stage, there are grounded Piranha Plants on the floor known as Piranha Sprouts. Except for the lack of a tongue, these enemies are essentially the same as the Pests, including the shrinking ability and inability to directly kill a Yoshi.

See the following video at 3:15 and 4:02.
