Media: video game: “Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island”
Developer: Nintendo
Platform:
SNES

Description:

Hootie the Blue Fish – supposedly a subtype of Piranha Plants rather than true fish – appear in stage 3-8. The ‘patrol’ pre-determined paths slowly, and will engulf Yoshi, should they make contact with him. Much like with Piranha Plants, they let Mario out in a bubble and contract and expand their body to simulate chewing, before spitting Yoshi back out.

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island [SNES] – Piranha Plant / Yoshi, Mario

Media: video game: “Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island”
Developer: Nintendo
Platform:
SNES

Description:

Piranha Plants appear throughout the game and found as early as level 1-1. From a distance, their bodies are shrunken, but will grow and expose themselves when Yoshi is near. This can often catch players by surprise. Should Yoshi mistakenly come too close, the Piranha Plant will encase Yoshi (letting Mario out in a bubble) and contract and expand its body as if to suggest chewing. After a few seconds, Yoshi is spit back up.

Super Mario World [SNES] – Yoshi / Various

Media: video game: “Super Mario World”
Developer: Nintendo
Platform:
SNES

Description:

Yoshi – who can be first met in the stage Yoshi’s Island 2, is able to grab certain enemies with his long tongue to swallow enemies (gaining one coin). The Koopa Troopers are the main exception to this because of their shells. Yoshi can spit them back out to use as a projectile weapon (red and yellow Koopas shoot bolts of fire instead) or if they are held for 30 in-game seconds, Yoshi will make efforts to swallow and will eventually do so.

Sword of Mana [GBA] – Lizardon / Hero, Heroine

leave a comment »

Media: video game: “Sword of Mana”
Developer: Square Enix
Platform:
GBA

Description:

Early in the game, the Lizardon enemies can be occasionally encountered in fields or more commonly in the Marsh Caves. Much like earlier games in the series, Lizardon uses its long tongue to grab and swallow the hero or heroine, bulging belly and all. Lizardon’s sprite is reused from Seiken Densetsu 3, though it seems to voluntarily spit the character out in this depiction.  The hero and heroine’s sprite also simply disappears – and much too early – as opposed to being pulled into Lizardon’s mouth.

Terranigma [SNES] – Cube / Ark

Media: video game: “Terranigma”
Developer: Quintet
Platform:
SNES

Description:

Late in the game, simple cube enemies are encountered in Beruga’s Lab as well as in the Lab Tower in Siberia. These cubes simply bounce backwards and forwards between walls, and if they collided with Ark, they would encase him, slowly draining him of health until they are destroyed with any regular attacks.

Silent Hill [PS1, PSN] – Split Head / Harry

Media: video game: “Silent Hill”
Developer: Konami
Platform:
PS1, PSN

The following is particularly spoiler-heavy.

Description:

In Midwich Elementary, the first major area of the game, there is a book in the otherworld library reserve that reads:

Hearing this, the hunter armed with bow and arrow said, “I will kill the lizard.” But upon meeting his opponent, he held back, taunting, “Who’s afraid of a reptile?”

At this, the furious lizard hissed, “I’ll swallow you up in a single bite!” Then the huge creature attacked, jaws opened wide.

This was what the man wanted. Calmly drawing his bow, he shot into the lizard’s gaping mouth. Effortlessly, the arrow flew, piercing the defenseless maw, and the lizard fell down dead.

Upon solving all the puzzles, the basement of the otherworld school has an elevator that takes Harry to the boss, a vague monsterish quadruped. At first, it will only attack with a headbutt, but after being shot a number of times, it will reveal that its mouth opens sideways. As the book mentioned previously, the key to defeating the boss is to shoot it with its mouth open. But, if Harry fails to escape (by either killing it quickly, or walking or running away), the enemy’s jaws will close on him resulting in an instant game over, where the screen fades to black and churning and munching sounds are heard.
