Last Cloudia [And, iOS] – Grandworm / Various

leave a comment »

Media: video game: “Last Cloudia”
Developer: Aidis
Platform:
Android, iOS

Description:

After completing the main quests at Underground Brahnda, the party is tasked with hunting a Grandworm as a part of the main quest. Eventually, in the 3-9 Undergroundborn quest in the Dara Desert, the party will fight one. At the beginning of battle, it will try to inhale a party member, swallowing them with a large bulge going down its body. When this happens, the swallowed character is completely removed from battle, and their portrait is removed from the bottom of the screen. It will hold them inside for an extended period before regurgitating them again. If there is only one character participating in the battle, being swallowed will result in an immediate game over, and they will not be regurgitated.

The Grandworm can actually be fought much earlier in the story, in the quest 1-13 That Which Rattles the Desert, but at this point in the game, it will never use the swallowing ability. Similarly, stronger Grandworms can be seen as regular enemies in the Mordana Sea of Sand area, but also will not use the swallowing ability.

In the Maidens on the Beach limited time event, the Grandworm also makes an appearance as the last boss, but will only use the swallowing ability in the very high difficulty Extra Challenge quest. The difference being in this version, it can swallow more than one player character without regurgitating the previously swallowed characters, making it particularly dangerous.

The Grandworm is also featured in the Ark, Sandwyrm, and can be seen with a wobbling stomach, as well as its mouth opening and closing intermittently. The Ark also features lore regarding the Grandworm, describing how it has been known to swallow buildings whole.

Crusader Quest [Android, iOS] – Hippo Warrior / Various

leave a comment »

Media: video game: “Crusader Quest”
Developer: Loadcomplete
Platform:
Android, iOS

Description:

After completing Stage 1 of Episode 6 (Hard) in the main story, the side story Legend of Primal Flames is unlocked, in which there are hippo enemies that can swallow the party. There are two variants – the Hippo Warrior and the Flaming Hippopotamus, depending on which route is taken, and will only appear on ‘hidden’ routes by fulfilling certain criteria.

The Hippo Warrior can be encountered in the Primal Jungle stages (following the Goddess Bella in the ‘Fork in the Road’ quest):

  • ‘In Search of the Totem – 1’ by taking the third path in the first section, reaching the end of the second section with 20 seconds or less on the stage timer and then selecting the hidden path;
  • ‘In Search of the Totem – 2’ by equipping a character with the Relic of the First Priestess ring and taking the hidden path in the first section;
  • ‘In Search of the Totem – 3’ by reaching the end of the section with 30 seconds or less on the stage timer, then selecting the hidden path;
  • ‘In Search of the Totem – 4’ by taking the first path in the first section, reaching the end of the second section with 20 seconds or less on the stage timer and then selecting the hidden path.

The Flaming Hippopotamus can be encountered in the Crater of Primal Flames stages (following the Goddess Anut in the ‘Fork in the Road’ quest, as well as the final quest):

  • ‘Path of the Primal Flames – 4’ by taking the Goddess Bella into battle and selecting the hidden path;
  • ‘Crater of Primal Flames’ by taking the second path in the first section, reaching the end of the second section with 20 seconds or less on the stage timer and then selecting the hidden path.

During the fight, the Hippo Warrior and Flaming Hippopotamus act as a mini boss, with a large pool of HP and a unique mechanic. They will frequently slam the ground, throwing the entire party in the air, then swallowing the entire party with their ‘Swallow’ ability. Distant party members are sucked in as well. Their belly will bulge and wobble around, and during this time, the player must rapidly tap 15 character blocks to be spit out, and deal massive damage to the hippo. Failing this sequence will still cause the party to be spit out, however there is much more saliva, the party is thrown farther, will receive heavy damage and will be stunned for 4 seconds.

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars [SNES] – Belome / Party Members

leave a comment »

Media: video game: “Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars”
Developer: Square
Platform: SNES

Description:

Early in the game, Mario and Mallow must fight the boss of the Kero Sewers, Belome, who appears to be a large four-eyed dog-like (cat-like?) monster with a long tongue. Aside from spells that inflict statuses and a basic licking attack, Belome will occasionally target and eat Mallow, removing him from battle until Mario attacks him a number of times, forcing him to spit him out. Mallow will make a comment how scary it was being eaten, after being rescued the first time. If Mario’s HP is reduced to zero while Mallow is still inside Belome’s stomach, this results in a game over.

Later in the game, the party will fight Belome once more, in Belome’s Temple at Land’s End. In this second encounter, Belome can target any party member to eat (Mario, Mallow, Geno, Princess Toadstool or Bowser), but will spit them back out immediately after commenting on their taste, using this taste to create a clone of the eaten character. Each character supposedly has a different flavor, and Belome will comment as such:

Ack! Sour!” (Mario)

“YES! THIS is YUMMY~” (Mallow)

“Bitter, but not bad…” (Geno)

“Mmm, tastes peachy…” (Toadstool)

“Yuck! How repulsive!” (Bowser)
