Tales of Phantasia [SNES] – Chameleon / Various

leave a comment »

Media: video game: “Tales of Phantasia”
Developer: Wolf Team (later Namco Tales Studio Ltd.)
Platform: SNES

Note: The SNES version only exists officially in Japanese.

Description:

The spirit, Chameleon, is an optional summon for Claus, and is obtained in the lower Morlia Mineshaft, using an Emerald Ring as a pact. When summoned, a large chameleon’s head will appear at the top of the screen, and flick out a red transparent line that is supposed to represent its tongue to pull in an enemy for an instant kill. This can only work on certain enemies, and has a chance to fail, in which Chameleon will not even attempt to flick out its tongue.

Summoning Chameleon to try eat certain enemies (particularly with large sprites) could crash the game, and it may be for this reason (along with being a summon with such limited utility) that Chameleon was excluded from other versions of the game. Chameleon exists in the Game Boy Advance version of the game, with a different sprite and animation.
