leave a comment »

Media: video game: “Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island”
Developer: Nintendo
Platform:
SNES

Description:

Hootie the Blue Fish – supposedly a subtype of Piranha Plants rather than true fish – appear in stage 3-8. The ‘patrol’ pre-determined paths slowly, and will engulf Yoshi, should they make contact with him. Much like with Piranha Plants, they let Mario out in a bubble and contract and expand their body to simulate chewing, before spitting Yoshi back out.

Gooooooo – Monster Fish

leave a comment »

Media: video game: “Gooooooo”
Developer: phyllis_thm
Publisher: (unknown)
Platform: iOS

Gooooooo is a simple game where one controls a very Bomberman-esque robot-like character to avoid being swallowed by the monster fish. To swim, the screen must be swiped left and right. Each stage gets progressively harder and harder, and if the fish catches up, it will gulp the character whole with a satisfied look on its face. This happens in a split second so is often difficult to see.

Yoshi’s Story – Big Blurp

leave a comment »

Media: video game: “Yoshi’s Story″ by Nintendo
Platform: Nintendo 64, Wii Virtual Console

Page 4 stage 2 is called the Jungle Puddle and has two sections. The first section is fairly straight-forward, with trees and platforms above the water and some small enemies. On reaching the second part of the level, the Hint Block offers us this piece of wisdom:

– Big Blurp –
He Lurks in the depths, waiting to have you for lunch.

Very quickly you will see a giant orange fish – Big Blurp – swimming in the water, following Yoshi and staring at him. If you fall in the water, Big Blurp is likely to swim up to Yoshi and gulp him down (complete with a speech bubble indicating how much he liked or didn’t like the taste!), and unlike the Piranha Plants of Piranha Grove, being eaten by Big Blurp instantly causes you to lose that Yoshi. Avoiding the waters doesn’t guarantee your safety either. Big Blurp is known to jump up right out of the water to try and devour Yoshi.

Near the end of the area a blue variant of the Big Blurp can be seen. Though this one is not known to leap above the water level, he will instead spit water out at Yoshi to try and knock him into the water, making him easy prey.

See the Big Blurp at 3:44 and the Big Blue Blurp at 5:55 of the following video.

Once the level is finished, the usual storytelling occurs:

The jungle lake was
swimming with hungry
fish called Blurps.

The Blurps could swim
and jump, but, mostly,
they liked to eat and eat.

The Yoshis didn’t want
to become fish bait, so
they quickly swam away.

The page turned, and
the Yoshis grew happier.

Kirby’s Dream Land 3 – Joe

Media: video game: “Kirby’s Dream Land 3″ by HAL Laboratory
Platform: Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), Wii Virtual Console

Rather small mention here, more for the sake of completion. In stage 2-3 of the game, there exists small sharks in the water, strangely called “Joe”. If a “Joe” approaches Kirby, he will latch onto Kirby’s face with a fierce bite, but will let go after a few seconds. He’s probably a bit too small to do any more. But he gets an ‘A’ for effort, right?

Kirby’s Dream Land 3 – Kirby and Friends

leave a comment »

Media: video game: “Kirby’s Dream Land 3” by HAL Laboratory
Platform: Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), Wii Virtual Console

In Kirby’s Dream Land 3, Kirby is joined by his blue counter-part known as Gooey can be spawned by pressing the A button and controlled with the second controller. A few different cast members can also help out, giving the various powers in the game some variability depending on which animal is befriended. There’s Kine the ocean sunfish, Nago the cat, Coo the owl, Chuchu the Slime, Pitch the bird and Rick the hamster. As should be common knowledge to most gamers, Kirby can gain the powers of his enemies by inhaling them and absorbing them, or may simply spit them out to use them as a makeshift missile.

Just like Kirby, Gooey shares the ability to absorb enemies’ abilities when controlled by a second person, but instead of inhaling them, he uses his long tongue to draw them in.

Interestingly, Kirby can inhale and absorb Gooey to regain one full icon of health (the cost of summoning him) though Gooey can’t do the same to Kirby.

Kirby can be seen doing so at 6:05 of the following video.

Of Kirby’s other friends, Kine and Rick are both worth a mention. When partnered with Kine (by pressing X next to him), he will take Kirby and hold him in his mouth, and when the partnership is cancelled (X again), he will spit him out.

In the introduction to world 2, they make use of this as a joke. Kirby and Chuchu are walking by a body of water when Kine hops out and snags Kirby in his lips. He and Chuchu fight over Kirby, each wanting him for themselves, though when Kine tries to take Kirby back, it is implied that he accidentally swallowed Kirby.

But perhaps it will be better understood if seen at 0:05 of the following video.

Rick is the only other friend who can directly swallow an enemy. When partnered with him, Kirby will ride on his back, and the Y button, which is normally used for Kirby’s inhale, will make Rick open his mouth to allow him to swallow an enemy (giving the power to Kirby) or spit them out like normal.

Rick can be seen doing his thing at 1:50 of this video. In that same video, Gooey makes good use of his tongue at 0:57.

Hungry Shark – Shark / Various Prey

leave a comment »

Media: video game: “Hungry Shark”
Developer: Future Games of London
Platform: iOS

Description:

As one might naturally infer, in Hungry Shark you control a shark and guide it to snack on fish, sea birds, humans, penguins and jellyfish often displaying a tongue-in-cheek message (such as ‘Aqualunch’ after one eats a scuba diver). As a result of the feeding, the shark grows in size to notable proportions though it does not need to be bigger than the prey to devour it, unlike in most games of a similar nature.

Shark Mouth: Dentist Bite [Android, iOS] – Shark / Perspective

with 2 comments

Media: video game: “Shark Mouth: Dentist Bite”
Developer: Sensky Ltd.
Platform: Android, iOS

Description:

‘Shark Mouth: Dentist Bite’ is of the classic straw-drawing variety of multiplayer game where each player in turn touches and removes a shark’s tooth. One tooth is the ‘sore tooth’ and the rest are ‘safe’. The unfortunate one to select the ‘sore tooth’ is crowned the loser and the shark simply grins mischievously – without a chomping animation – accompanied by somewhat creepy giggle and an emotive face in the corner to suggest how that player should feel.
