SNES

Description:

In the Jurassic Bay area of the first stage, falling into the water brings Bonk to the Jurassic Sea area, where there are numerous Pafpaf enemies – feminine reptile-like creatures with over-sized cartoon lips. If Bonk gets too close, the Pafpaf will grab him head-first, with his legs kicking furiously before he is swallowed. A short level, ‘Inside Pafpaf’s Body’ is played with cartoon innards and gastric acid that causes digestion damage. In order to escape, Bonk must travel through the body and escape from the opposite end. Read the rest of this entry »

Sword of Mana [GBA] – Lizardon / Player

Media: video game: “Sword of Mana”
Developer: Square Enix
Platform:
GBA

Description:

Early in the game, the Lizardon enemies can be occasionally encountered in fields or more commonly in the Marsh Caves. Much like earlier games in the series, Lizardon uses its long tongue to grab and swallow the hero or heroine, bulging belly and all. Lizardon’s sprite is reused from Seiken Densetsu 3, though it seems to voluntarily spit the character out in this depiction.  The hero and heroine’s sprite also simply disappears – and much too early – as opposed to being pulled into Lizardon’s mouth. Silent Hill [PS1] – Split Head / Harry

Media: video game: “Silent Hill”
Developer: Konami
Platform:
PS1

The following is particularly spoiler-heavy.

Description:

In Midwich Elementary, the first major area of the game, there is a book in the otherworld library reserve that reads:

Hearing this, the hunter armed with bow and arrow said, “I will kill the lizard.” But upon meeting his opponent, he held back, taunting, “Who’s afraid of a reptile?”

At this, the furious lizard hissed, “I’ll swallow you up in a single bite!” Then the huge creature attacked, jaws opened wide.

This was what the man wanted. Calmly drawing his bow, he shot into the lizard’s gaping mouth. Effortlessly, the arrow flew, piercing the defenseless maw, and the lizard fell down dead.

Upon solving all the puzzles, the basement of the otherworld school has an elevator that takes Harry to the boss, a vague monsterish quadruped. At first, it will only attack with a headbutt, but after being shot a number of times, it will reveal that its mouth opens sideways. As the book mentioned previously, the key to defeating the boss is to shoot it with its mouth open. But, if Harry fails to escape (by either killing it quickly, or walking or running away), the enemy’s jaws will close on him resulting in an instant game over, where the screen fades to black and churning and munching sounds are heard.

Seiken Densetsu 3 [SNES] – Pakkun Lizard / Player

Media: video game: “Seiken Densetsu 3”
Developer: Squaresoft
Platform: SNES

The following is particularly spoiler heavy.

Description:

After  シェイド (Shade), the elemental spirit joins your party, you will wind up on 火山島ブッカ (Volcanic Island Bukka). Caves in this area are home to the ぱっくんオタマ (Pakkun Tadpole), the pink tadpoles that once damaged enough, can mature into the blue ぱっくんトカゲ (Pakkun Lizard) known as ‘Biting Lizard’ in the English version of Secret of Mana. ‘Pakkun’ perhaps from ぱくぱく (Pakupaku) roughly means ‘eating, gobbling, flapping the mouth open and closed’, et cetera. Unlike the previous game, these are considered normal enemies rather than boss enemies. They are much more nimble and unfortunately their favorite attack is no longer to devour your party, but rather they have taken to using a tail attack to cause damage. They still retain their tongue flicking ability which is now named ぱっくんベロンッ, which I guess means Pakkun Tongue or Pakkun Lick, however they rarely use it. In the fan-translated version, this attack is known simply as “Gulp, gulp”.

If the lizards decide to eat you, you may notice that the chosen character often ‘outruns’ the tongue and proceeds towards the Pakkun’s body even before the tongue is retracted. Once inside the now bloated belly, the lizards will wag their tails blissfully with an equally satisfied expression on their face before they are forced to spit out their meal.

Much later in the game, once air travel becomes available, a place called ひかりのこだいいせき (Ancient Ruins of Light) is home to a blue variant of the Pakkun Tadpoles, known as ぱっくりオタマ (Pakkuri Tadpole) who mature into a green variant of the Pakkun Lizards, called ぱっくんドラゴン (Pakkun Dragon), who appear otherwise identical, but use their tongue attack even less it seems. Pakkuri or ぱっくり seems to mean ‘open, gaping, like a mouth’.

Playable characters include Duran, Angela, Hawkeye, Riesz – who are all humans – as well as Kevin, who transforms into a wolfman at night, and Charlotte the elf. Read the rest of this entry »

Secret of Mana [SNES, Wii] – Biting Lizard / Player

Media: video game: “Secret of Mana”
Developer: Squaresoft
Platform: SNES, Wii

Description:

Fairly early in the game, after fighting the Spikey Tiger boss, Luka will ask you to investigate the waterfalls immediately east of the Water Palace. Inside, there will be a small pink egg patterned with a love heart that births a pink tadpole dubbed Tonpole in the English version. It is incapable of any special attacks and is only able to cause damage by jumping around.

Once damaged a sufficient amount, the music will change to boss battle music and the Tonpole will mature into a Biting Lizard, a blue lizard capable of an unnamed tongue attack that will grab any of your party members standing above, below or to the side of it. As a result it will invariably swallow that party member. If struck, the Biting Lizard will spit out that player, but if left alone it will do so regardless.

Around the midpoint of the game in the Frost Palace, you will fight three Tonpoles in a boss battle simultaneously, all of which can mature. However, if you bought all the armour in the previous town, the Biting Lizards’ swallow attack cannot cause any damage.

Near the end of the game after gaining Dryad’s magic, there is a boss battle with a green variant of the Biting Lizard known as a Snap Dragon. It is not associated with a tadpole stage so will mature immediately after hatching. Its swallow attack is much more powerful, causing considerable damage even with the latest armor.
