Heroic: Magic Duel [Android, iOS] – Devourer / Various

leave a comment »

Media: video game: “Heroic: Magic Duel”
Developer: Nordeus
Platform:
Android, iOS

Description:

The Devourer is a large purple frog-like minion with a big belly, that is made available after reaching Arena 3 in the Battle Arena, and is an Epic rarity unit received randomly from chests or purchased in the store. In battle, it will slowly walk towards the enemy portal, and if it encounters an enemy minion, it will grab them with its long tongue to swallow them. The swallowed enemies disappear from battle, and their health bar is displayed above the Devourer’s, which will deplete, signifying digestion damage. While digesting, the Devourer is slowed, and cannot eat another enemy minion. If the Devourer is killed before completely digesting an enemy minion, they will be freed. Upon completely digesting an enemy, the Devourer will return to normal speed and can swallow another enemy minion. It cannot swallow another Devourer, instead attacking it using its tongue. It can swallow minions much bigger than itself.

There is a promotional video that introduces the Devourer online, which shows it swallowing the camera or viewer’s perspective.

Media: video game: “Gon’ E-Choo!”
Developer: Marc Ellis
Platform: Computer, iOS

Note: In the interests of full disclosure, I have been acquainted with the artist of this game, but I do highly recommend that people play it, as it is well-made and does show your support to a couple of indie creators. Visit the Steam page here.

Description:

In this love letter to the classic Popeye game, the player controls the otter who is trying to collect paper airplane notes. All the while, the gator will try to swallow them in a few varying ways, resulting in a distended belly and a life lost.

  • If the gator catches the otter on the same level platform, the otter will be swallowed head-first.
  • If the gator grabs the otter from a higher or lower platform, the gator swallows them tail-first.
  • If the gator is directly below the otter as they are jumping to a lower platform, the gator opens their mouth wide as the otter falls inside.

However, if the otter collects the book power-up (The Junior Guide to Petty Zoological Facts), they will switch roles with the gator – size, clothes, and predatory hierarchy and will be able to swallow the gator for bonus points, but this will not result in a distended belly. After a certain period of time, the gator will respawn from behind some bushes or a fountain, depending on the level.

leave a comment »

Media: video game: “Age of Wonders III”
Developer: Triumph Studios
Platform: Computer

Description:

In Chapter 2 of the Golden Realms expansion of the game, there are enemies from the Naga faction known as Gluttons. They are depicted as portly fish-like people with a snake-like body. They have a melee attack known as Swallow Whole, to swallow nearly any hero and unit (except elementals), and remove them from battle. Swallowed units can potentially remain inside the Glutton indefinitely, but are freed if the Glutton is slain. Swallowed units appear not to take digestion damage – only damage suffered from the initial Swallow Whole attack. If the last remaining units are swallowed, then the player loses the battle.

It is possible to form an alliance with the Naga faction to command Glutton units as well.

Crusader Quest [Android, iOS] – Hippo Warrior / Various

leave a comment »

Media: video game: “Crusader Quest”
Developer: Loadcomplete
Platform:
Android, iOS

Description:

After completing Stage 1 of Episode 6 (Hard) in the main story, the side story Legend of Primal Flames is unlocked, in which there are hippo enemies that can swallow the party. There are two variants – the Hippo Warrior and the Flaming Hippopotamus, depending on which route is taken, and will only appear on ‘hidden’ routes by fulfilling certain criteria.

The Hippo Warrior can be encountered in the Primal Jungle stages (following the Goddess Bella in the ‘Fork in the Road’ quest):

  • ‘In Search of the Totem – 1’ by taking the third path in the first section, reaching the end of the second section with 20 seconds or less on the stage timer and then selecting the hidden path;
  • ‘In Search of the Totem – 2’ by equipping a character with the Relic of the First Priestess ring and taking the hidden path in the first section;
  • ‘In Search of the Totem – 3’ by reaching the end of the section with 30 seconds or less on the stage timer, then selecting the hidden path;
  • ‘In Search of the Totem – 4’ by taking the first path in the first section, reaching the end of the second section with 20 seconds or less on the stage timer and then selecting the hidden path.

The Flaming Hippopotamus can be encountered in the Crater of Primal Flames stages (following the Goddess Anut in the ‘Fork in the Road’ quest, as well as the final quest):

  • ‘Path of the Primal Flames – 4’ by taking the Goddess Bella into battle and selecting the hidden path;
  • ‘Crater of Primal Flames’ by taking the second path in the first section, reaching the end of the second section with 20 seconds or less on the stage timer and then selecting the hidden path.

During the fight, the Hippo Warrior and Flaming Hippopotamus act as a mini boss, with a large pool of HP and a unique mechanic. They will frequently slam the ground, throwing the entire party in the air, then swallowing the entire party with their ‘Swallow’ ability. Distant party members are sucked in as well. Their belly will bulge and wobble around, and during this time, the player must rapidly tap 15 character blocks to be spit out, and deal massive damage to the hippo. Failing this sequence will still cause the party to be spit out, however there is much more saliva, the party is thrown farther, will receive heavy damage and will be stunned for 4 seconds.
