Klonoa: Door to Phantomile – Nahatomb

Media: video game: “Klonoa: Door to Phantomile”
Developer: Namco
Publisher: Namco
Platform: Playstation

The following is particularly spoiler-heavy.

The last boss of the game is known as Nahatomb and is described to be a ‘nightmare’ entity. Aside from spawning lesser enemies from the spines of his back and a generic slam attack using his limbs, Nahatomb’s first form can open his mouth wide and extend a long, red tongue to try and ensnare Klonoa, who must jump over it several times like a jump rope. Failure to do so successfully results in Nahatomb pulling Klonoa into his gaping maw, swallowing him and then ejecting him out of the spines of his back.

Once defeated, Nahatomb will inhale Klonoa to fight his second form, though his insides do not look biological. His second and third form do not seem able to eat Klonoa.

Final Fantasy VII – Hungry

Media: video game: “Final Fantasy VII″ by Squaresoft (now Square Enix)
Platform:  Playstation, Playstation Network

At the end of Disc 1 in Corral Valley just after Bone Village, one can encounter a pudgy lizard-like enemy known as ‘Hungry’. Besides a simple attack, Hungry also knows the spell ‘Mini’, and once one of your characters are miniaturised he is capable of a unique ability called ‘Eat’ where he will swallow a miniaturised party member – effectively ejecting that character out of the fight for the entire battle. He can do this to two of the characters in the party, after which he does not seem to be able to finish off the last one.

Media: video game: “Spyro 2” by Insonmiac Games
Platform:  Playstation, Playstation Network

In Aquaria Towers, the seventh listed stage of the game, Moneybags warns you of metal sharks and pitches his shark-proof shark submarine for 100 gems. Declining his offer gives you the option of swimming through the metal sharks’ cavern which will quickly send a shark your way to chomp down Spyro causing him to immediately lose a life.

At the end of the game, once all 16 of the skill points have been achieved, you are treated to an ‘epilogue’ – still images that feature many of the different characters of the game and what supposedly happens to them after the ending. One of them features Hunter himself about to be chomped by a metal shark.

Kirby’s Dream Land 3 – Peloo

Media: video game: “Kirby’s Dream Land 3” by HAL Laboratory
Platform: Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), Wii Virtual Console

In stage 3-6 of this game, most of the area is confined in a black pyramid-like structure. Toward its exit (taking the direct-right path in the main room), there are invisible enemies who only reveal themselves to you when you approach. They are simply disembodied faces. Much like Pacto of stage 2-3, if you stand under them, they will attempt to devour you. In Peloo’s case, it will extend a very long tongue to draw Kirby in before chewing him up and spitting him out, for half an icon of damage.

As also mentioned in the other Kirby’s Dream Land 3 posts, Kirby’s other friends who can fall prey include Kine the ocean sunfish, Pitch the bird, Coo the owl, Chuchu the slime, Nago the cat and Rick the hamster.

Kirby’s Dream Land 3 – Pacto

Media: video game: “Kirby’s Dream Land 3” by HAL Laboratory
Platform: Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), Wii Virtual Console

In level 2-3 of this platformer, there is a yellow, sentient enemy waiting near the end of the first screen, known as Pacto. If you wander under where he waits, he will descend on Kirby and whichever of his friends is with him at that point in time, close his jaws and chew with a high pitched squeaky sound. Kirby is then released, half an icon of health poorer than when he entered.

Each of Kirby’s friends who can fall prey to Pacto include Kine the ocean sunfish, Pitch the bird, Coo the owl, Chuchu the slime, Nago the cat and Rick the hamster.

Coo and Kirby fall for Pacto’s trap at 7:39 of the following video.
