Parasite Eve II [PS1] – Glutton / Aya

leave a comment »

Media: video game: “Parasite Eve II″
Developer: Squaresoft
Platform: PS1

Description:

First of all, the predator in question doesn’t seem to have an agreed-upon name since it never seems to be referred to by name in-game, and there doesn’t seem to be any official publications that give it one. People seem to call it Glutton, Garbage Sucker, Trash Monster, Big Mouth, among many made-up names.

Fairly early in Disc 2, Aya will fight a boss in the garbage incinerator of the Shelter area. It appears to be some large quadruped with huge arms and a massive mouth and is noted for its ability to inhale sharply, causing garbage – and Aya – to drift toward its mouth, and if she gets close enough, the boss will grab Aya in its jaws with a loud squish and seemingly swallow her as the screen fades to black and indicates a game over. Because it seems to have a tough protective hide, the most effective way to damage it is to shoot it while it is inhaling, mouth gaping open. Of course, if one reloads their gun at an inopportune time, they may leave themselves open to being helplessly drawn in and devoured.

If the boss’s shoulders are shot at, he tends to summon smaller NMCs (Neo-Mitochondrial Creatures). If these smaller enemies are not disposed of before the boss inhales again, he will eat them (each healing 100HP) and spit them back out at Aya.

Finally, once the boss has been damaged a large amount and moves what most would consider uncomfortably close (stepping forward twice), the boss is then able to use an attack where it sticks out its ridiculously long tongue and slams it on the ground dealing heavy damage and the Berserker status effect. Gooooooo [iOS] – Monster Fish / Player

leave a comment »

Media: video game: “Gooooooo”
Developer: phyllis_thm
Platform: iOS

Description:

Gooooooo is a simple game where one controls a very Bomberman-esque robot-like character to avoid being swallowed by the monster fish. To swim, the screen must be swiped left and right. Each stage gets progressively harder and harder, and if the fish catches up, it will gulp the character whole with a satisfied look on its face. This happens in a split second so is often difficult to see. Read the rest of this entry »

Kirby’s Dream Land 3 [SNES, Wii] – Acro / Kirby

leave a comment »

Media: video game: “Kirby’s Dream Land 3″
Developer: HAL Laboratory
Platform: SNES, Wii

Description:

Once the game is beaten, including defeating the final boss after collecting all the star-heart pieces, a new mode labelled simply as “B” will unlock in the options menu of that save file. B mode pits Kirby against all the game’s bosses with only a single life allowance. The second boss of the game is the orca known as “Acro” (Get it? ‘Orca’ backwards!). Even though it looks like he could, he is unable to devour Kirby in either the main game or the B mode, but if you lose to Acro in B mode, you are treated to a still image of Acro holding Kirby between his jaws. Enjoy it, because it takes a while to beat the game to completion! Read the rest of this entry »

Kirby’s Dream Land 3 [SNES, Wii] – Dedede / Kirby

leave a comment »

Media: video game: “Kirby’s Dream Land 3″
Developer: HAL Laboratory
Platform: SNES, Wii

The boss of world 5 of Kirby’s Dream Land 3 is none other than King Dedede. There is not much to comment about Dedede, only that he has the same inhalation ability as Kirby does, though he will invariably spit you out for minor damage if he successfully lands the move. Unlike with Peloo or Pacto, Dedede will not inhale Kirby’s other animal friends.

It can be seen in 0:25 of this video.

When defeated, Dedede will move onto his second, rather disturbing ‘possessed’ form. Here, one of his attacks is to float toward you, with his belly opened as if it was a set of jaws. Similarly, if caught in those jaws, Kirby is simply spit out again through his normal mouth.

Dedede’s belly jaw can be seen at 2:13 of the video below.

Kirby’s Dream Land 3 [SNES, Wii] – Peloo / Kirby and friends

leave a comment »

Media: video game: “Kirby’s Dream Land 3”
Developer: HAL Laboratory
Platform: SNES, Wii

Description:

In stage 3-6 of this game, most of the area is confined in a black pyramid-like structure. Toward its exit (taking the direct-right path in the main room), there are invisible enemies who only reveal themselves to you when you approach. They are simply disembodied faces. Much like Pacto of stage 2-3, if you stand under them, they will attempt to devour you. In Peloo’s case, it will extend a very long tongue to draw Kirby in before chewing him up and spitting him out, for half an icon of damage.

As also mentioned in the other Kirby’s Dream Land 3 posts, Kirby’s other friends who can fall prey include Kine the ocean sunfish, Pitch the bird, Coo the owl, Chuchu the slime, Nago the cat and Rick the hamster. Read the rest of this entry »

Kirby’s Dream Land 3 [SNES, Wii] – Pacto / Kirby and friends

Media: video game: “Kirby’s Dream Land 3”
Developer: HAL Laboratory
Platform: SNES, Wii

Description:

In level 2-3, there is a yellow, sentient enemy waiting near the end of the first screen, known as Pacto. If you wander under where he waits, he will descend on Kirby and whichever of his friends is with him at that point in time, close his jaws and chew with a high pitched squeaky sound. Kirby is then released, half an icon of health poorer than when he entered.

Each of Kirby’s friends who can fall prey to Pacto include Kine the ocean sunfish, Pitch the bird, Coo the owl, Chuchu the slime, Nago the cat and Rick the hamster.

Kirby’s Dream Land 3 [SNES, Wii] – Kirby and Friends / Various

leave a comment »

Media: video game: “Kirby’s Dream Land 3”
Developer: HAL Laboratory
Platform: SNES, Wii

Description:

In Kirby’s Dream Land 3, Kirby is joined by his blue counter-part known as Gooey can be spawned by pressing the A button and controlled with the second controller. A few different cast members can also help out, giving the various powers in the game some variability depending on which animal is befriended. There’s Kine the ocean sunfish, Nago the cat, Coo the owl, Chuchu the Slime, Pitch the bird and Rick the hamster. As should be common knowledge to most gamers, Kirby can gain the powers of his enemies by inhaling them and absorbing them, or may simply spit them out to use them as a makeshift missile.

Just like Kirby, Gooey shares the ability to absorb enemies’ abilities when controlled by a second person, but instead of inhaling them, he uses his long tongue to draw them in.

Interestingly, Kirby can inhale and absorb Gooey to regain one full icon of health (the cost of summoning him) though Gooey can’t do the same to Kirby.

Kirby can be seen swallowing Gooey so at 6:05 of the following video.

Of Kirby’s other friends, Kine and Rick are both worth a mention. When partnered with Kine (by pressing X next to him), he will take Kirby and hold him in his mouth, and when the partnership is cancelled (X again), he will spit him out.

In the introduction to world 2, they make use of this as a joke. Kirby and Chuchu are walking by a body of water when Kine hops out and snags Kirby in his lips. He and Chuchu fight over Kirby, each wanting him for themselves, though when Kine tries to take Kirby back, it is implied that he accidentally swallowed Kirby.

Kine accidentally swallows Kirby:

Rick is the only other friend who can directly swallow an enemy. When partnered with him, Kirby will ride on his back, and the Y button, which is normally used for Kirby’s inhale, will make Rick open his mouth to allow him to swallow an enemy (giving the power to Kirby) or spit them out like normal.

Rick can be seen doing his thing at 1:50 of this video. In that same video, Gooey makes good use of his tongue at 0:57.

Chrono Trigger [DS, iOS, PS1, SNES] – Tyrano / Player

leave a comment »

Media: video game: “Chrono Trigger”
Developer: Squaresoft
Platform: DS, iOS, PS1, SNES.

Description:

Around halfway into the game, when forced to travel to 65,000,000 B.C. for the second time, one will eventually fight the boss ‘Black Tyrano’ along with the leader of the Reptites, Azala. One of the Tyrano’s attacks is to flick an unfortunately poorly animated tongue (in actuality, a series of red circles) to one of your party members, pulling them into its mouth. The Tyrano chews and then spits the character out, draining them of a large amount of HP.

Similarly, near the end of the game, during the quest to find the Rainbow Shell, you will fight another version of the same boss, known as the Rust Tyrano, with an identical tongue attack. Read the rest of this entry »
