Super Mario RPG [NS] – Belome / Party Members

Media: video game: “Super Mario RPG”
Developer: ArtePiazza
Platform: Nintendo Switch

Description:

Early in the game, Mario and Mallow must travel through the Kero Sewers, and will encounter the boss known as Belome at the end. Belome appears to be a large four-eyed dog-like monster with a long tongue. Belome’s attacks include a licking attack and status-inflicting magic. He is also scripted to specifically target Mallow to flick him into the air and swallow him whole. Mallow can be freed if Mario hits Belome a number of times, and conversely, Mallow can remain inside Belome indefinitely if Mario does not attack. If Mario’s HP is reduced to zero while Mallow is still inside Belome’s stomach, this results in a game over, or if Mario is already knocked out beforehand, Belome swallowing Mallow will also result in an instant game over.

Later in the game, the party will face Belome once more, in Belome’s Temple at Land’s End. In this second encounter, Belome can target any party member to eat (Mario, Mallow, Geno, Peach or Bowser), but will spit them back out immediately after commenting on their taste, using this taste to create an enemy clone of the eaten character. Each character supposedly has a different flavor, and Belome will comment as such:

  • “Ack! Sour!” (Mario)
  • “YES! This is yummy!” (Mallow)
  • “Bitter, but not bad…” (Geno)
  • “Mmm, tastes peachy…” (Peach)
  • “Yuck! How repulsive!” (Bowser)

In the Nintendo Switch remake of the game, Belome can be fought a third time in Belome’s Temple after defeating the final boss of the game. He attacks the party, seemingly irritable, complaining of a sore, scratchy throat, and although there are slight differences in the fight, such as increased difficulty and clones granting him impenetrable defence, the fight is very similar to the second fight. When Belome swallows a character in this fight, he no longer comments on their taste. Upon defeating him, he spits out Mallow’s strongest weapon, which was seemingly the cause of his sore throat.

Omori [NS, PC, PS4, XBO, XBXS] – Humphrey / Various

Media: video game: “Omori”
Developer: Omocat
Platform: Computer, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One

Note: As always, support your indie developers. Purchase a physical copy of the game here, or visit the Steam page here.

Description:

During the Headspace portion when the game is Two Days Left, the party will travel to Deeper Well, and meet the whale known as Humphrey. He will mention that Sweetheart, one of the game’s antagonists, has entered his body to meet with the sea witches that live in his stomach, and welcomes Omori and friends to enter his mouth, too.

Inside, Humphrey demonstrates the ability to shift his insides to manifest villi-like protrusions that bizarrely, have faces, are sentient, share his awareness and are all also known as Humphrey.

Omori and friends navigate through Humphrey’s innards and stomach acids to catch up with Sweetheart, and at certain points, can witness named NPCs falling into acid – specifically, a named Sprout Mole NPC called Big Molio who if not rescued, will simply disappear, and a recurring NPC known as Snaley jumping into acid, believing it to be an inviting pool of water. After witnessing Sweetheart meet with all three sea witches, later known as Slime Girls, the party is able to access the lower floor of Humphrey’s gut, and are transported there by being swallowed by one of Humphrey’s large buds, as if it was an elevator.

In the lower levels, the Slime Girls are fought as a boss, and once defeated, Humphrey will complain of overwhelming hunger. With nothing with which to feed him, the Slime Girls fall prey to a giant Humphrey bud that forms under them, chewing and devouring them.

The party then must fight Humphrey in a series of boss fights. The second of Humphrey’s battles is against Humphrey Grande – an amalgamation of Humphrey buds that when near-defeat, will swallow the party and initiate the third phase of the boss fight, against Humphrey (Face), the backdrop of which shows bones of previous prey. Bizarrely, in this phase, Humphrey will continue to swallow the party, a group attack showing a large mouth advancing toward the fourth wall, as the party is sent deeper and deeper into the gut of the whale each time he does this.

Once defeated, the party is swallowed again and wind up in a photorealistic mouth – a deeper mouth than Humphrey the whale’s actual mouth, where they will initiate a fight against the fourth phase, Humphrey (Uvula), who can be defeated in a single hit. After doing so, the party is then regurgitated out of every mouth that swallowed them, demonstrating the bizarre, bizarre anatomy that is Humphrey, and are eventually ejected out of his blowhole.

If playing the Omori route during One Day Left, it is possible to re-enter Humphrey by first feeding him a Giant Check, acquired from Mr. Jawsum. The Slime Girls can be found inside, and side quests to restore their bodies can be completed.
